CHAPTER NINE

“Interesting,” Detective Sterling said, leaning back in his chair with a thoughtful expression. “So, the boyfriend had a vendetta against Jason?”

“It seems like it,” I said with a shrug, “but if rumors are to be believed, there are a lot of men out there who had a vendetta against Jason. He wasn’t a choirboy.”

Detective Sterling nodded, and I could see the gears turning in his head. After we had left Scarlett’s place, I decided to tell the detective about what I had discovered. While I wanted to help Scarlett, I also knew that we needed to follow every lead until we found the killer. If Will was the murderer, then we needed to do everything in our power to keep him out of Scarlett’s life. I just wasn’t sure if she would agree that my actions were in her best interests, especially since Detective Sterling had a dangerous glint in his eye.

“What are you thinking?” I asked carefully.

“I think we need to get that boy down here for questioning,” Detective Sterling said, turning to his computer and quickly typing something. “I know Will Somers; he’s been in here a few times, and his family has a nasty reputation. We had to deal with his dad, his brothers, and his cousins. It was only a matter of time before one of them got mixed up in something like this.”

“So, he’s part of Greenwood’s most notorious crime family?” I asked, vaguely amused by the idea that Greenwood had its own version of a crime family.

Detective Sterling turned to me with a serious look. “Don’t take this lightly; escalation is as natural as breathing for these criminals.”

“We don’t actually know that he’s guilty though,” I pointed out. “Don’t make your usual mistake of running after the first person who looks suspicious. I’d like to keep Scarlett’s trust; she could still be very useful to this investigation.”

“Don’t worry,” he said with a deadpan expression, “we’ll keep your friendship with Scarlett intact. We were always going to bring Will in for questioning. You do realize that we have records of everyone we arrest? As soon as Jason was murdered, we thought of Will. Especially since the fight only happened a few weeks ago.”

“What about Aaron Hoffman?” I asked, feeling annoyed. “We can’t just ignore him because he’s rich.”

“I didn’t,” Detective Sterling said, rolling his eyes at me. “We checked with his people; it looks like as soon as he walked off that stage, he got right onto a plane and left for his conference in Berlin. He was flying over international waters when Jason was murdered.”

I nodded slowly. One less suspect was always a good thing, especially in a case with so many. It still didn’t feel quite right going after Will, but I shook my head.

“Wait, if you knew that Will was a strong suspect, then why did you chase after me and bring me in for questioning?” I asked. “Are you seriously telling me that you brought me in before you brought
